Size
The Joovy Kooper X2 is a side-by-side double stroller which can seat two children up to 50 lbs each. The seats are larger large than other lightweight double strollers, and the canopies have nice-sized SPF 50 sunshades with windows that are peekaboo. Other notable features include a self-standing basket that has a the capacity of 25lbs and cup holders for one parent, and swing-away bars to help kids to get into and out of their seats. This is a great option for suburban and urban families. It is also newborn-ready with the double set which includes an infant wedgie that can be used to lie flat in a position.
Weight
The weight of a double buggie will determine its ability to push. A light buggy is easier to lift and carry but might not have enough suspension to withstand bumps and uneven terrain.
Most double buggies have the capacity to hold a maximum weight for each seat, and some have overall frame limits, so it’s important to check the details of each model prior to you buy. Some fold with seats removed, making them even smaller and lighter this can be beneficial if storage space is at a premium.
Tri-fold doubles are typically the lightest models, as they only require a single hand to lift the back and lower sections. They’re also narrower than side-by-side buggies, making them a good choice to fit through doorways. The iCandy Geo 3 tri-fold double is one of lightest on the market. It can comfortably accommodate twins, or a toddler and baby.
Tandem buggies start out as a single pushchair and have adapters to add a carrycot, a second seat or car seat which makes them a great option for growing families. Some, like the iCandy Orange offer over 30 different seating configurations, meaning they can adapt to your family, up to a 3rd child. They are heavier than trifolds, however, since the weight is evenly dispersed, they are more comfortable to maneuver.
Folding
The best small double buggies fold easily and can be folded in a matter of minutes. Our Lab experts love this feature since it helps them fit the buggies into the back of their car and save storage space when not in use. For instance the Joovy Kooper X2 has straps on each seat that pull up, and the entire thing folds down — it’s a tri-fold that even our most experienced testers can accomplish with just one hand.
The lightweight Delta Children LX side by side is another excellent option for a double buggies. Its light weight is a plus but also the features it has big pop-out canopy that include SPF 50 protection and a peekaboo window as well as swing-away bars to assist children to get into and out of their seats; and reclined chairs and leg rests designed for little ones.
Manoeuvrability
One of the most important aspects to think about when selecting a small double buggy is its maneuverability and how easy it is to get around with both children aboard. Certain pushchairs, like the iCandy Orange with its ‘cinema seating’ (where the back seat is elevated) are better at this than other models.
Buggies with narrow tandems can be excellent at this, as are side-by-side designs. However, they are more substantial overall and so may be tricky to maneuver through doorways.
The UPPAbaby Vista 2 pushchair is a great example, as it is a relatively narrow model that allows for two additional seats and more importantly, the pillion board, which can accommodate a third child.
Other models with three wheels like the phil&teds dot are also incredibly agile, especially with its clever ‘dot kits’ that turns into an inline buggy. It comes with different seating options for children of different ages. It also allows the front seat to be turned to face parents for ultimate face-to-face time. It also comes with a storage basket and is easy to fold. A great choice for families with growing children!
