In August 2021, a letter sent by the Association of Boxing Commissions (ABC) stating that the WBA having multiple titles is “misleading to the public and the boxers”. The ABC also stated that if the WBA fails to do a satisfactory action regarding the issue, they would recommend to its members:
Esteemed champions have fearlessly transcended their comfort zones and have ventured into uncharted territories, conquering their former divisions with an air of dominance, motivated by the golden opportunities awaiting their newfound weight classes. On the other hand, some fighters strategically opt to move up in weight class to avoid impending challenges.

Lineal Championship vacancies are filled via a box-off between the leading contenders (the #1 and #2 contenders, or in rare instances #1 Vs #3) in a weight division. Impartial, independent ranking organisations are often referred to in order to determine who the top contenders are. The typically absurd ratings and comical decisions of sanctioning bodies are ignored.
This table gives names and limits recognised by the four widely regarded sanctioning bodies (World Boxing Association (WBA), World Boxing Council (WBC), International Boxing Federation (IBF), and World Boxing Organization (WBO)); the label used in Boxrec.com’s data; and by the magazines The Ring and Boxing News.
The suggestion that a fight must now be “sanctioned” by an ABC organization – with a glittery belt on the line – in order to be for a world championship, is propaganda, perpetuated by promoters and sanctioning bodies, who rely on each other to remain relevant. When Jack Johnson defeated Tommy Burns, he received no belt. Neither did Jack Dempsey when he savaged Jess Willard for the title in 1919. No sanctioning bodies were needed.
With 17 weight classes in repton boxing club famous boxers and four major sanctioning bodies that bestow world titles, keeping track of who holds each of the belts can be difficult — especially when there are sometimes multiple titlists in each organization because of interim and secondary belts.
Most notable names from this division are the Thai native Thammanoon Niyomtrong, better known for his ring name ‘Knockout CP Freshmart’ and the Puerto Rican, Oscar Collazo, who is a rising star having recently won the WBO Mini flyweight title.
1988: Prior to his fight with Lineal Champion, Carlos De Leon, Evander Holyfield declared that, assuming he won, he would then move up in weight to begin campaigning at Heavyweight. “I can dominate the cruiserweight division but what I really want is the heavyweight championship,” Holyfield said. “And either way you go, you’ve got to go through Mike Tyson.” (8)

The strawweight division was brought in by the various sanctioning bodies between 1987 and 1990, making it one of the newer classes in professional boxing. It had been introduced by the Olympic Games in 1968 under the Light Flyweight classification. Ring Magazine finally recognised the decision in 1997.
In front of 51,052, Pacquiao lost a hard-fought fight via a controversial unanimous decision when the three judges scored it 117–111, 115–113, and 115–113 in favor of Horn. Many pundits, current and former boxers believed Pacquiao had done enough to retain the WBO title. Although Horn was the aggressor and showed determination throughout the fight, it nearly came to an end in round nine when Pacquiao took control and looked for the stoppage. Horn survived the round and was told by referee Mark Nelson, that he needed to show competitiveness or else he would stop the fight. Despite now having lost four of his last nine fights, Pacquiao remained humble, “I’m professional. I respect the judges.” It was reported that Horn would receive $500,000 from this fight and Pacquiao was guaranteed at least $10 million. Pacquiao stated he would activate the rematch clause and fight Horn again at the end of 2017. CompuBox stats showed that Pacquiao landed 182 out of 573 punches thrown (32%), whilst Horn landed 92 of 625 thrown (15%).
There is no weight limit to the heavyweight division at all. Any fighter over 200 lbs is classed as a heavyweight and we have seen fighters weigh in as heavy as 373 lbs. Because of these huge weights, this division has always and will always be the most exciting and beloved division in boxing.
